Guest The problem is not flow, it's startup time. If this were a factory with many batches of 20 going through every day, the larger batches would deliver more. Once the pump is primed and all stations were busy, you would produce a batch every 22-25 seconds. With batch size 1, you might get it down to 35 seconds. It would not take too many batches before you're delivering more value with larger batches. It's the bottlenecks that get you, not the batch size.

Guest "by reducing batch-size (shorter iterations) we introduced more slack for the coin turners"
By slack time do you mean workers are sitting idle?

Doc (Guest) While I haven't played this yet, it strikes me as being very similar to the GetKanban game, which I have played. I like this because it is somewhat simpler than that game. And it's FAR less expensive. I agree that introducing the CFD (and cycle and lead times) would be good. It would be easy enough to do. In fact, I'm thinking that this could be played more than once, with these things (cycle, lead, CFD) added in a second playing.

Sam (Guest) The game is conceptually very good.

However, it is somewhat elaborate to implement - especially for a team to which you are introducing Kanban.

It is best played over 2-3 hrs. with a facilitator for each team. It is also best played competitively.

It will be great to add CFD as part of the game - and to increase the learning experience.

One will also need to write a better implementation note for this game - i.e. on how to conduct this game.

Therefore availability of Word document of the description will be very useful - since then edits can be done on it.

Good game, nevertheless. Useful. And well conceptualized.

Frank Vega (Guest) Both my wife and I tried out this game and in both cases the time for the first pass (horizontal/context-switching) was significantly greater than the second pass (vertical/focus).

However, we wondered how much of our first passes (horizontal/context switching) was simply impacted by "learning" the game (remembering my Roman numerals). So we both repeated the horizontal/context switching a second time and found the time decreased significantly and was similar to our initial vertical/focus pass.

We then each repeated a third horizontal/context-switching pass as follows: one of us was the timer and the other the worker. The timer would press the start button on an online stopwatch and immediately call out a column (Left, Center, Right), and as the worker completed the entry in the called out column, the timer immediately called out another column (purely random order) making sure to also watch as the columns reached their limits so as to not call out a column once it was completed.

We felt this more closely represented the context-switching effect of not really knowing what might come up next when you have lots of work in progress. Both of our times increased significantly and were now again similar to our first horizontal/context-switching pass.

Try this modification and see what you experience.
